Jerry Svigals is currently the director of the Smart Card Institute and is an internationally recognized authority on Smart Card technology. He is generally regarded as the "father of the magnetic stripe card." Before dedicating his considerable expertise to the establishment of TranStar®, Jerry spent 33 years at IBM, where he was systems manager for Asia and Australia, a territory that covered one third of the IBM world. He has been a contributor multiple patents and has authored numerous publications on electronic banking, smart cards, andrelated subjects.

Jerry will be discussing his role as Assistant Director of Marketing and IBM Systems Manager for Asia and Australia during the emerging computer era when IBM was losing orders to competitors in Japan and elsewhere. He will provide insights into the marketing strategies developed and implemented by IBM that enabled it to remain on top of the industry. Later, when the same strategy was used in Japan, it educated the Japanese vendors and improved their competitive position.
